Build back better

‘I had half my colon removed for bowel cancer two weeks ago – I’m already out walking every day and the medics agree that walking is the road to recovery physically and mentally. I hope to have a clean bill of health, my fourth 1000 miles and an increased appreciation for all we take for granted by the year’s end.’ Brian Coates

Anew beginning… at 88!

‘The last four years have been hard with delays getting new hips but my doctor is pleased that I’m walking as much as I can – and doing the challenge is non-negotiable. I started doing it on my 80th birthday in 2016, and I hope my 88th birthday is a new beginning!’ Pamela Wright

Peace of mind

New heights!

‘Aside from my 1000 miles I hope to climb my highest ever ascent – Ben Nevis in May, and complete a marathon mighty hike in August. I desperately want to improve my overall fitness and mental health, so I’m looking forward to the challenges and pushing myself to new limits!’ Rachel Wilson

New ground

‘I hope my walking takes me to places I’ve not seen yet, near or far. When I first took up this challenge I was grieving the loss of my husband; I’ve come to realise it’s not huge distances that matter but simply being out there, in the fresh air, taking in all that nature has to offer. If I can achieve this, I will feel content and sleep well!’ Gillian Snelgar

Ahappier year

‘I really hope to achieve some weight loss and have a happier year. It’s off to a great start – a major tick off my bucket list in January – seeing the Northern Lights in Tromsø after answering a call from a girl who didn’t want to go alone. I laid on my back and watched the amazing show – and all because I star
