GAY TIMES Magazine
18 February 2022

In this special issue of GAY TIMES Magazine, we’re putting the conversation front and centre. No Planet, No Pride says it all. If our fight for queer liberation, equality and global human rights is successful, what’s the point if at the end of it all we don’t have a habitable planet to live on? If true queer joy is the aim, we’re going to need a planet that is sustainable, healthy and hospitable for everyone – no matter their geographical location. A fight for LGBTQ+ justice must also be a fight for Earth. You may be asking yourself what the link between climate activism and the LGBTQ+ community is. The connection isn’t so obvious at first. But in this issue you will discover the ways in which the LGBTQ+ community – as well as all marginalised communities – will be disproportionately impacted by the looming climate crisis. You will also read about ways in which we are uniquely positioned to help the fight in avoiding catastrophe. Queer campaigners are overrepresented in climate activism groups, showing that our community is already playing an active role in meaningful change. The LGBTQ+ community has decades of experience in organised campaigning and can more clearly recognise the colonial, patriarchal and capitalist systems that heavily contribute to the problem we are facing as a society and a planet. In this issue we speak with some of these people doing great work to raise awareness, as well as explore the challenges we all face. From conversation around making Pride events more sustainable and using drag as an artform to educate on environmental issues, to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs leading the charge on saving the planet and queer fashion designers using the metaverse for a more sustainable way to express their creative vision, our community is using its knack for innovation to spearhead the climate crisis movement.
