Across pop culture, we’ve laid out some of the biggest LGBTQ+ moments in film, TV, music and books that we can expect to enjoy in 2023. From returning TV favourites like Young Royals, Heartstopper and Élite, to brand new music artists on a trajectory to quickly becoming queer obsessions, we’ve laid out five guides that fill you in on the new, now and next in LGBTQ+ entertainment. We can also expect some history-making moments too; from Elton John’s final ever live show at Glastonbury Festival, to Ncuti Gatwa hitting screens as the first ever openly gay, Black Doctor in Doctor Who. Add in new books from trans icons Munroe Bergdorf and Elliot Page, the highly- anticipated third season of Hacks, some more much-needed LGBTQ+ rep in the MCU, and it’s clear that the queers will keep winning in 2023. We’ve also looked ahead to some of the key community, social and sporting moments in our A Year of Queer guide. From huge queer celebrations at WorldPride in Sydney and EuroPride in Malta, to LGBTQ+ visibility on the pitch for the Women’s FIFA World Cup, the calendar for next year is increasingly resembling the rainbow more and more. Role models, visible advocates and LGBTQ+ representation has thankfully increased tenfold over the past decade, but we should never take that for granted. We always comment that the reason we see so much push back from far-right political figures when it comes to LGBTQ+ equality is because – more than ever – they have no choice but to see queer people thrive, be successful and, most importantly, lead happy lives. So as you settle into 2023 and start looking towards the year ahead, we hope our Queer Guide gets you excited about some of the queer joy we have all yet to experience. There is more than enough to look forward to. It goes without saying that starting off the year on a positive note should always be the agenda – no matter how cold it gets.
