Welcome to the May issue of Good Housekeeping; a rather special issue to mark a once-in-a-generation moment – the Coronation. His Majesty King Charles III and The Queen Consort will both be crowned in a magnificent ceremony on Saturday 6 May.

For many of us, this will be the first coronation in our lifetimes, while for others, it’s the first since they were young children. Either way, it’s a unique moment in our history and promises to be a fascinating spectacle. I know from speaking with many of you just how eager you are to celebrate and get behind our new King and Queen Consort. You also feel, as I do, that it’s such a wonderful opportunity to gather with friends, neighbours and communities in a positive and unifying way.

In putting this issue together for you, we’re following a Good Housekeeping tradition. As regular readers will know, we celebrated our centenary last year, and this magazine has marked every coronation of the past 100 years with a special cover – King George VI in May 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953 (see top right).

If you’re a lover of interesting historical facts, I think you’ll really enjoy the feature by the joint chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces, Tracy Borman, who outlines the traditions involved in crowning a British monarch (page 36). She also entertainingly describes some highlights and mishaps of coronations past.

Meanwhile, Royal biographer Robert Hardman writes for us on what we can expect from the era we are now entering and what sort of king our new Monarch is likely to be, as well as the importance of The Queen Consort to his reign (page 12).
