Michelle Yeoh celebrates becoming the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress following her triumph in Everything Everywhere All at Once at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles

I n a night of triumphant comebacks and inspiring women, Michelle Yeoh’s passionate message at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles rang out loud and clear.

“Ladies, don’t let anyone tell you that you are ever past your prime,” the 60-year-old star proudly proclaimed, accepting the Oscar for Best Actress to rapturous applause.

Helping prove her point was co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, who joined Michelle and their film Everything Everywhere All at Once in dominating the ceremony.

Presented this year by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the 95th Academy Awards had made a few changes – including exchanging the traditional red carpet for a champagne one.

Referring to last year’s Oscars, when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage, Jimmy joked the organisers must have been confident no blood would be shed to go for a lighter shade.

As ever, the fashion on the carpet was as significant as the event itself, with many of the A-listers following the colour code in an ethereal swathe of whites, creams and silvers.

Michelle shone in a white feathered gown by Dior, while Jamie dazzled in full-length, long-sleeved Dolce & Gabbana with corsetry detailing.

To present Michelle with her award, last year’s Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain wore a silver sequinned bustier gown by Gucci featuring a black velvet train, while nominee Michelle Williams, up for her role in The Fabelmans, was elegant in a bridal-inspired white dress by Chanel couture, worn with a sheer cape.

RED CARPET WONDERS

Always one for a statement look, British actress Florence Pugh wore a Valentino couture empire-line gown with giant puff sleeves over black hotpants and a pair of chunky platforms.

Halle Berry also went for a split-to-the-thigh look with a Tamara Ralph gown embellished with sequinned rosette corsages, as activist Malala Yousafzai sparkled in a custom silver hooded sequin dress by Ralph Lauren.

In contrast, a heavily pregnant Rihanna, a Best Song nominee for Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, went over to the dark side in black leather Alaïa, as did Nicole Kidman in black sequinned Armani Privé.
