With its picturesque harbour, cobbled streets and uplifting views, this Cornish fishing village couldn’t be better for a spring break

St Mawes

STAY

Positioned on St Mawes’s pretty harbour front, with its vintage sailboats and swooping seagulls, The Idle Rocks (3) has to be one of Cornwall’s loveliest addresses.

Bedrooms are light-filled and fresh with whitewashed walls, seagrass rugs underfoot and linens in sky-blue and sand.

The mood is easygoing, even on busy weekends, and mornings can be spent on the terrace simply watching the tide roll in and out.

TASTE

For a harbourside lunch, The Watch House is an excellent bet, or hop on the ferry to Place Creek, join the South West Coast Path at St Anthony Head (1) and hike along to The Hidden Hut above Porthcurnick Beach: expect hearty stews with rustic bread, as well as gasp-inducing views. Continue to Carne Beach, where The Thirstea Co. serves coffee and ice cream from a revamped horse box. Back at The Idle Rocks (2), chef Dorian Janmaat crafts superb menus using responsibly sourced Cornish produce, such as pan-seared scallops with pea veloute.

INDULGE

The quaint cobbled alleys are home to a clutch of charming shops. Grace & Favour on Marine Parade has chunky knitted jumpers and soy wax candles, while Aspiga on Victory Hill is a must for breezy sundresses and raffia tote bags. Drop into Mr Scorse Gourmet Deli & Wines for local produce, from artisanal preserves to small-batch Roseland Peninsula gin.
