THE CORONATION SPECTACLE LIGHTING UP THE WORLD TOP LANDMARKS SHINE OUT IN HONOUR OF THE KING

REPORT: JUBIDA BEGUM.

Striking lights, dramatic drone displays and colourful lasers lit up some of the world’s iconic monuments in honour of the King’s coronation and concert last week. Notable landmarks in the UK, including London’s Tower Bridge and The Shard, displayed a colourful spectacle on the evening of the ceremony at Westminster Abbey and again as part of the BBC’s Lighting Up the Nation event the next day, with several sites around the world following suit. Here, HELLO! looks at how 15 different locations marked this momentous occasion…

LONDON

Various locations in the capital including Tower Bridge (main photo), London Bridge, Guildhall and Mansion House were illuminated in red, white, and blue to mark the occasion, while Big Ben was the backdrop for a series of projections of the four home nations’ symbols: rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

EDEN PROJECT

Spectators at Cornwall’s Eden Project, who included volunteers from the community, were treated to a spectacular drone show, while the eco-attraction’s famous Biomes turned multicoloured.

BLACKPOOL

Both Blackpool’s tower and its seafront attractions provided an interactive light show for the crowds who flocked to a free screening of the Coronation Concert on the Tower Festival Headland.

THE SHARD

In an extravagant display, the tip of the 1,000ft Shard building in London featured an image of the Union flag every night from sunset to the early hours of the morning during the weekend of celebrations. The spectacle featured 552 LED lights and fixtures beaming from the building’s top 20 storeys.

CARDIFF

Figures including a heron (pictured) and a Welsh dragon made up of drones flying in formation dominated Cardiff Bay, with crowds gathering at Plas Roald Dahl from the early evening to watch the concert at sunset.

BELFAST

Belfast’s City Hall donned the iconic red, white and blue as part of a memorable light show for the Coronation Concert.

SHEFFIELD

Dazzling the crowds celebrating with their own Union flags, Sheffield’s Peace Gardens and Town Hall came alive in a wonderful display of lasers and projections.
