A hasty reroute proves fortuitous for one Bramham-bound pair despite heavy going, while a consultant doctor lets off steam with a first eventing victory

A SPIN around the open intermediate (OI) wasn’t plan A for the winners of this section, Jack Mantel and Jack Daniels, but after the cancellation of Chatsworth left the Bramham-bound duo short of a run, they rerouted – with a winning result.
“Some of our cross-country round felt a little hairy in the mud, but we both really benefited from the run,” said Jack, who also won a BE100 section on Haslemere Prince. “I hadn’t been to Bishop Burton for nine years and I thought the changes the team had made were amazing – the courses were super-educational at all levels and beautifully dressed.” Bramham will be a first attempt at a long-format four-star for both horse and rider.
“Jack Daniels only started eventing as a seven-yearold and has fast-tracked quite quickly, going from BE100 to four-star in three seasons,” explained Jack of the 10-year-old gelding, who is owned by his partner (who concidentally also shares the same Christian name), Jack Thomas Watson.
