macOS Calendar

Create multiple notifications for events, with countdown alerts and more. Never miss another event

• App credit: Apple Inc

Calendar events are easy to create and if you need a reminder beforehand it is easy to add one. However, there is much more to Calendar notifications than you might realise. For example, you can create a notification that occurs after the event instead of before. This might be useful as a reminder to follow up on a work meeting.

A single notification before an event begins is a useful reminder but you can get more creative with notifications. Some people like to count down to a big event like a holiday, trip, birthday or wedding, so use Calendar for your countdown: ten days, nine days, eight days…

Multiple alerts for a Calendar event. Oddly, they are not in date order. They work fine though

Step-by-step Create multiple notifications for events

Open Calendar and double-click a day to create an event. Name it and then click in the date/alert section to customise it. The default notification is two hours before.

Click the alert setting to display a menu with additional options for notifications. Select the best time from the list. It can be a few minutes or up to two days before.

You may not have noticed, but move the mouse over the alert time and a ‘+’ button appears on the right. Click it to add another event notification with a new time or day.

We already have a notification set for one hour before, but you may need extra time to prepare for an event. Select ‘1 day before’ to add a second event notification.

Repeat and add an alert for ‘2 days before’. That appears to be the maximum, but it is not and to get notifications days or weeks ahead, select ‘Custom’.

Select ‘Custom alert’. Set it to days before, and then enter the number of days. Repeat. Create a fun daily countdown to an important event in your calendar.
