To produce attractive guides, courses and training materials about the Mac, software or services, record the screen and save it as a video you can share. Screen recordings have many uses and you might need to create recordings for work, but it could be simply showing a friend or relative how to do something on their Mac that they are having difficulty with. Instead of explaining in words, you could simply record your screen and send them the video. Screen recording has been around for some time, but more features have been added in recent updates. A keypress and click is all it takes to start recording.

After creating the video recording of the desktop, it is best converted into a common format before sharing it. Open the video in QuickTime Player and select File>Export As. Choose 4K, 1080p, 720p or 480p video resolution. You might want to try a couple of formats and see which is best. Lower resolutions result in smaller file sizes.

Step-by-step

1 Configure the options

Press shift+cmd+5 to launch the app and click ‘Options’ in the toolbar. Do you want to record your voice? Where should it be saved? Set your preferred options here.

2 Record the screen

When you want to begin recording the screen, press shift+cmd+5 and click the fourth icon in the toolbar. This records the whole screen, which can be useful.

3 Record an area

You might not want to record the whole screen and certainly not with a 27-inch iMac. Click the fifth icon to record an area of the screen. Resize and move the outlined area.

4 End the recording

While recording, a new icon will be displayed in your Mac menu bar. End the recording by clicking this Stop button,
