Warranty woes

I was interested to read Keith Dunn’s letter mourning the loss of the Jaguar XE in the April 2023 edition of the magazine.

I agree with Keith that the diesel engine in the XE (and XF), the Jaguar designed Ingenium engine, is a bit vocal but a recent XF test drive showed that Jaguar seem to have attended to this as the car was a lot quieter than my present model.

I have the 2000cc diesel XF with the Jaguar Ingenium engine. I found this was an improvement over the Ford/ Peugeot diesel engine in my previous XF which had a very loud and distinctive tappet noise – quite irritating.

So I was at first pleased with the Jaguar-designed Ingenium engine which as Keith says has very good fuel consumption but I was dismayed to find in the last few months of the threeyear warranty that the two engine balancer shafts needed replacing. This was a fiveday visit to the Jaguar dealer workshop – major surgery.

How much would this have cost me if it had occurred outside the warranty I wonder or would Jaguar have paid for it as a design fault?

This seems to be the way of any car model in that improvements are made in the immediate years after the car is launched. This is probably due to commercial pressures to get the car on sale as soon as possible and so pre-launch on road testing is kept to a minimum.

Sadly however it does mean that it takes three or four years to get the particular car at its best – just before a complete rebuild or a discontinuation.

XJ-S Aero

In February 2023 Keith Helfet wrote about aerodynamics and lift (CLR and CLF) and I found it very interesting, he also wrote that the XJ-S had more front lift than rear lift which is not good.

My question is: did Jaguar address this issue in the last facelift with the plastic bumpers? Is it any better than the earlier design? Also, how is the TWR bumper kit when it comes to lift?

Thank you for an excellent magazine, my favourite part is Keith Helfet’s page, I always read it first when I receive the magazine. Peter Hällström

Thanks Peter. Stand by for an answer when we can find one!
