It feels weird hyping up next year’s bikes when many of us don’t even know how we’re going to pay our heating bills this winter. Then there’s the fact manufacturers are still trying to clear old stock after massively overordering in the wake of COVID. But without new bikes, there’s nothing to push the technological side of the sport forwards. Plus, this economic malaise can’t last forever, and there’s no harm dreaming about what we’ll be able to buy once it does. And besides, our annual big autumn test is always less about which bike(s) to buy, and more about identifying what the biggest trends will be in the coming year.

This year we’ve covered some key bases, testing an XC race bike from a previously roadie-centric brand, a bump-eating high-pivot enduro sled and a selection of trail bikes, with and without electrical assistance. We’ve made sure to include a couple of more affordable options, along with some bonkers high-end stuff (because that’s all that seems to be selling at the moment), to give a proper snapshot of the bikes available in 2024. I hope you find the test interesting. See you on the trails!
