January is often a time for people to tighten their belts – metaphorically if not physically, given the amount of food and booze consumed over the festive period. So, we’ve packed this issue with budget-friendly content. We’ve got tests of entry-level trail bikes (p64) and wheels for all wallets (p76), along with tips for saving money (p10) and getting in the right mindset to make the most of your rides (p92). Alongside some top UK routes, we also see if Slovenia is a good place for a cut-price MTB break.

While we do showcase a lot of flashy kit in the mag (because that’s where the innovation is), none of that is necessary to have fun on two wheels. Look no further than issue’s feature with Morgan and Ffi Pickstock (p33) for proof of that. Just a couple of years ago, the siblings caught the MTB bug riding humble Carrera hardtails from their local Halfords, and even now they’re on bikes their family have scrimped and saved to buy. Yet these two are some of the UK’s hottest young talents, not held back in any way by their hardware. If anything, having more basic kit has forced them to build skills to compensate, aiding their rapid progression. Something to think about, perhaps! See you on the trails...
