Level Zero: Extraction is a simple concept, it’s what you would get if Escape From Tarkov took place in the Alien universe. This combines the gear fear of the former with the genuine terror of being stalked by an alien to create an incredibly tense experience.

It may not sound particularly unique, effectively taking the idea of one of the most popular games in the world and throwing it into a world that holds more than a few similarities to one of the most loved film universes ever created, but there is one key feature that makes LevelZero:Extractiona little more interesting than that – light.

When you spawn in as ahuman on the only map available in the closed beta, an abandoned research facility in the South Pole, you likely won’t be able to see much with all the lights off and little to no natural light filtering in. You’ll have to quickly flip on your flashlight, which has a very limited battery although does magically recharge while off, to create a thin and weak beam of light until you can stumble your way to a light switch and safety.

ALIEN MONSTERS

The alien monsters that will be stalking you as you wander around the research facility are damaged by light, and being caught in an illuminated room will see them burn up within seconds. Even your weak flashlight can help keep them at bay and more powerful torches unlocked as you progress will be even more effective. But if they catch you in a dark room, which will happen thanks to lights turning off after a while or through a power overload that shuts down all lights in the facility, then you probably won’t make it out alive.

You’ll have to plan your route, making sure not to go back on yourself to rooms where the power is depleted and have an escape plan in mind should the alien, which is controlled by other real players, find you. You can bring in, or find, some flares that will get you out of a sticky situation but unless you have a big bank balance you won’t be able to rely on them for your entire run.

WATCH YOUR BACK

Your every move has to be planned around what light sources you have access to, and what you can use to fend off an alien should they get too close. But, as I discovered many times, just thinking about light leaves you very vulnerable to the other players on the map and running around with a big flare blasting l
