DAYS OUT

Delve deep into a city that is paved with both medieval and Roman history by visiting York.

Famous for pioneering delicious chocolate, wash down the hidden gems of this city with agood cuppa –Yorkshire Tea, of course!

Where to go

Known to be one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, York Minster is one not to be missed. A hub of Christianity in the North of England since the 7th century, this sacred space is a masterpiece.

Take a guided tour learning all about the 800-year history, visit the Undercroft Museum where the remains of the Roman barracks lie and discover the city’s Viking past, too.

If that wasn’t enough, see York from all new heights by climbing the 275 steps of the tower for panoramic views – especially great as the sun sets.

Plus, if you’re bringing your little ones, young adventurers can collect a pre-made Little Explorer Backpack including binoculars, a torch and a compass to hunt their way around the Minster – who knows what you could find?

And with three historical exhibitions exploring the story behind York’s hidden gems, on throughout the year, it’s the perfect day out for the entire family.

Admission prices start from £6. Children under 17 go free withapaying adult. Please visit: yorkminster.org

A great history lesson

The Shambles

You may recognise this street, due to its cobbled paths and overhanging buildings – as the Shambles is thought to have inspired Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley.

One of York’s most famous landmarks, the streets are a snippet into the UK’s medieval past. Back in the day, the narrow streets had a purpose – made to ensure that meat sold in the shop fronts was kept out of direct sunlight.

But now, thankfully, the street has been restored into a collection of quirky cafés, lunch spots and plenty of gift shops, too. If you are a Potter fan, you can purchase a magical array of memorabilia.

And if you really want to get into the spirit, you can attend a Wizard Walk or Ghost Tour, too – spooky!

Tours start from just £5. Please visit: wizardwalkof york.com
