Suicide squad: kill the justice league

You wouldn’t get it

We love the look of the four Squad members, at least. Their game, not so much.

Harley Quinn, clowned queen of crime, might want to bonk us on the head with her epic-tier mallet for making comparisons to the Arkham series. But like Batman on the case, it’s impossible not to see the connections. We’re sure the great detective would agree that this pivot from top-tier solo action to live service multiplayer is quite the curious case indeed.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League isn’t only from Arkham developer Rocksteady, it’s a bona fide sequel. An early moment that sees the titular squad, officially known as Task Force X, exploring Metropolis’ ‘Batman Experience’ drives this home, as they poke around a museum mocked up to take you through the Arkham series’ story. Then the lights go out. And Batman begins picking you off one by one. And this time, he’s looking to kill.

This four-strong supervillain team, forced to work for the government lest their brains explode, have been outvillained, you see. Brainiac’s skull ship looms over the city, and his purple powers have brainwashed most of the Justice League, including the now Dark-purple Knight. Playing in co-op, you stumble through the dark trying to locate exits until only one of you is left, all alone with Batman in the shadows. It’s just a shame that this single short sequence within the first hour is about as memorable as any mission is going to get, the game devolving into a tired live service grind.

BOMB BUDDIES

It’s tragic, too, as there’s a dynamism to the opening hours. It’s an invasion-in-progress, meaning you catch the tail end of the [blorp!] hitting the fan at speed force velocity. Painfully under-briefed by their scheming handler, Amanda Waller, the squad are ping-ponged between League members as they struggle simply to stay alive, being barely saved by The Flash before he too is turned by the mind-altering alien invader.

Getting around this open world Metropolis is a breeze – every character in the Squad can run up walls and cross distances with just a couple of button presses.

These are possibly some of the best character models we’ve ever seen, and their emotive faces are put to work.

2

Countershoot the flashing enemies to open them up for a stun, but avoid getting sniped or you’ll be shocked, and unable to use traversal powers for a while.
