There are calls for compulsory inspections of cars at banger meets, after the theft and destruction on track of two cherished American classics. Enthusiasts on all sides have condemned the use of the cars, with thousands taking to social media to ask for more thorough VIN checks against stolen vehicle records as part of the scrutineering process.

A 1985 Ford Country Squire and a 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix were destroyed in the race meeting at Ringwood in Hampshire and it later transpired that the cars had been stolen from their owners at separate addresses in Andover and Salisbury. It’s now subject to a police investigation.

Dominic Brock from Stowmarket is a banger racing journalist and commentator at Yarmouth Raceway in Norfolk, as well as being an avid classic enthusiast and says you can be into both hobby and sport. ‘I go to classic car events and love the machinery on show, but some of my all-time favourite races have involved classic cars, all of which were so far gone, they wouldn’t have seen the road again.’Dominic Brock from Stowmarket is a banger racing journalist and commentator at Yarmouth Raceway

‘Any rumours of theft and the race must stop’

As with the rest of the community, Dominic has denounced the Ringway incident. ‘Once there is even the slightest rumour a car is stolen, the promoters shouldn’t let them race. Such incidents will bring all short oval racing into disrepute if fans like myself don’t call them out on this.’
