With more than 390 acres of habitat, 25,000 wildfowl and some 31 bird hides, Rutland Water Nature Reserve has to be one of the best places in the UK if you enjoy watching birds and wildlife.

The reserve has seen great success in increasing the population of ospreys, once an endangered species, and they are a real highlight of any trip here.

To make the most of your visit, pitch up at the lovely Lyndon Top Caravan & Camping Park, which lies beside the shores of Rutland Water.

The native red squirrel is sadly now rare in Britain, but there is a thriving population in the Widdale Squirrel Reserve – you can get close to these charming little creatures, which are surprisingly tolerant of people.

Other species to spot while you’re there include badgers, hedgehogs, buzzards, bullfinches and lizards.

Honeycott Caravan Park makes a great base for a tour to the area, and it’s just a 10-minute walk from Hawes, which has a good selection of shops, bars and eateries.

At 50 miles long, Cardigan Bay is the biggest bay in the British Isles and a magnet for marine life, including grey seals, harbour porpoise, and common and bottlenose dolphins.

Rarer visitors include minke whales, Risso’s dolphins, sunfish, basking sharks, puffins and other seabirds.

At Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, you can learn all about them, and take a boat trip around the bay.

Blaenwaun Caravan Park is located four miles north of Cardigan, and offers tremendous views of the bay.
