CAN WE RESOLVE A PROBLEM WITH A LEAKING WINDOW?

Q We have a 2014 coachbuilt and recently visited Dorset, staying on a site by the sea. The weather was fine for the most part, but on the final day, there was torrential rain. The angle we were pitched at meant one side of the ’van took the brunt of the driving rain.

When we were about to leave, we noticed water had come in beneath the lounge window – this has not happened before. It has rained since and we didn’t notice any issues, but we’re worried in case it happens again in heavier rain. What would you suggest we do, please? Ken Daniels

A Diamond Dave replies… From your description, I’d guess that these were exceptional conditions. If the rain was driving hard against the side of the motorhome at a slight angle, so it could drive between the window and the wall of the ’van, it is possible for it to push water past the seal, especially if the windows were not fully fastened.

Assuming that to be the case and bearing in mind it hasn’t happened in ‘normal’ conditions, I’d say don’t worry, because it’s unlikely to happen again.

Even if it does recur, it is likely to be due to similarly exceptional conditions, in which case, just mop up and put it down to experience - but perhaps stay away from coastal pitches!

Q We’re looking at a campervan that is described in the advert as a “professional conversion”, although the current owner doesn’t know who did the conversion work. But what does that mean? What should we look out for? Ben Price A Nick Harding replies… Is it made by a converter with a proven track record? Or a manufacturer with ISO 9001 status? Sounds like that’s a no. Perhaps it has Type Approval?

Does it have other documentation to prove it qualifies as a fit and proper campervan (which you’ll probably also need for insurance purposes)? This is important info you need to bear in mind.

Actually, now that I’ve seen photos of your potential buy – it’s clearly a DIY job. Who knows what’s going on behind all that carpet lining, fancy lighting and outsize wheels? I would avoid.

WHERE CAN WE STAY THAT IS NEAR THE FERRY PORT IN CAEN?
