December saw freight operator DB Cargo offer 12 Class 90s and 10 Class 67s for sale as the company evaluates its locomotive requirements.

The locomotives on offer are 67001/003/004/009/011/018/019/026/028/030 and 90019-021/024/026/028/029/034-037/039. All are currently located at Crewe Electric depot, with the exception of 67003/004/019/030, which are at Toton.

However, EWS later lost the Royal Mail contract for which it had been ordered and the fleet has never really been fully utilised.

Of the 10 Class 67s being offered for sale, only 67028 is currently operational, while the remainder are all stored. The longest stored example is 67019, which was stood down in March 2015, and the most recently stopped is pioneer 67001, this having been officially taken out of service in May 2023.

The company is also selling the 12 Class 90s which were taken out of traffic between February and July 2023, when DB Cargo removed them from service citing the increased costs of operating the electric locomotives which made their continued use impractical.

Although five of the operator’s Class 90s remained in use in July last year, the final example was stored on July 20, as 90039 The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transpor
