Freightliner calls on government for expanded use of electric locomotives

Freightliner is calling on the Government to support the operation of electric-hauled trains, while also appealing for the costs of electricity to be made more affordable and gaps in electrification on the rail network to be sorted. NEW LOCOMOTIVES could be on the agenda for Freightliner as the operator makes the case to operate more electric-hauled trains, as well as using alternative fuels.

Speaking to The Climate Show on Sky News in mid-December, the operator highlighted the need for the Government to support modal shift to rail.

In a statement highlighting the television show, the company said: “Freightliner calls on the Government to set a long-term target to treble rail freight volumes by 2050. Such an ambitious target will be a clear statement of intent from the Government and provide confidence to the private sector to make significant investments in long-term assets that deliver growth.”
