Mortal Kombat was the first fighting series I ever loved, but I’d be lying if I said that Mortal Kombat 3 didn’t disappoint me a little. It played well, but with the new urban setting and the loss of some of the series’ most recognisable characters, it almost felt as though Shang Tsung himself had ripped the soul of the series away. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was an updated version that brought back classic characters like Scorpion, Reptile and Kitana and added more diverse stage backgrounds, making it considerably more appealing than the original version. In the summer of 1997, it was one of the games I most wanted for my newly acquired Mega Drive.

The only problem is that I’d already played Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the PlayStation. The combination of 32-bit power and CD-ROM storage allowed for a gloriously overstuffed celebration of carnage, including all of the characters and most of the backgrounds of the earlier games.
