DOWNTIME WITH… JOE CARPENTER

The Sale full-back on the NZ tour, chicken kormas and fighting a horse-sized bat

YOUR HOUSE is on fire, what one item would you save?

Oh, easy, my PS5. I play far too much Call of Duty to leave that behind.

What’s your go-to dance move?

I  have no idea. I think I would go for the gun fingers to a bit of garage.

What would be your Mastermind specialist subject?

Golf, the PGA tour or Rory McIlory. I love golf. I really want to get down to a ten-handicap but it’s all about putting the hours in during the off-season. I would love to play a round at Pebble Beach in the States or the Royal Liverpool, where The Open was played last year.

Do you have any superstitions?

I always put tape on my right wrist before my left and I also put my right boot on first too. I’m not sure why.

Would you rather fight off one horse-sized bat or a thousand bat-sized horses?

One horse-sized bat. I think a thousand of anything is far too many, whereas one bat, give it a swift right hook and goodnight, it’s all done.

What was your first job?

I worked at my girlfriend’s dad’s pub. It’s called The Stansfield Arms in Apperley Bridge just outside of Bradford. I used to get a good bit of free food when I was working there. That’s a good bit of PR for them.

How excited are you about England’s summer tour?

I’d definitely say 11/10 excited.

It’s a dream come true to get on a tour like this, especially being on the other side of the world. It’s pretty exciting.

Which team-mate would you want to travel the world with?

Tom Roebuck.

He’s one of my boys and we would have a good laugh together. Although he is definitely the organiser. He’s looking after the passports and I’m a rock-up-on-the-day kind of guy.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

For rugby, it has always been to just enjoy it. There’s always going to be hard work, there’s always going to be big collisions, always going to be sore bodies, but ultimately if you don’t enjoy and love what you do, you’ll lose the motivation. So just love every minute of it.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

The sauna. I absolutely love it post-training. Or a Garlic Churrasco burger from Nando’s, have you ever had one? Oh my, try it, it’s decent. It’s a burger with two garlic breads instead of a bun, two chicken thighs and some pickled onions and greens. Go have that with peri-peri chips
