My food philosophy

Ben Fogle on soufflé, snacks and unwinding with a glass of wine

BREAKFAST IS…

Porridge, fresh fruit, homemade bread, juice and coffee. I don’t drink milk because it doesn’t agree with me, so my porridge is made without it and I drink my coffee black – Ilike a nice, strong, non-bitter coffee, then I’m pretty happy. We have breakfast together as a family, then dogs need to be walked and children need to get off to school.

I NEVER ORDER IN. I’m not anti-takeaways, but food never tastes as nice when it’s delivered. It loses heat, and it doesn’t taste the same when you heat it back up. We prefer to make it a proper event and go out to eat, otherwise we’ll cook from scratch. My wife’s a great cook, so she takes the lead. She’ll make curry, spaghetti Bolognese or cheese soufflé… I look forward to that when I come home from an adventure!

WHAT I EAT DEPENDS ON WHERE I AM IN THE WORLD. I’m away 80% of the year, which makes eating healthily and regularly very difficult. Some days I’ll have no food whatsoever, other times it’s roadkill, or food foraged from bins, or sometimes the people I’m with hunt for their food. But I take chocolate, freshly ground coffee, and salt and vinegar crisps along with me. That comfort food reminds me of home.
