Errata – Frodingham

In the June feature ‘Keadby and Frodingham engine sheds and outstations’ by Roger Griffiths and John Hooper we have been caught out by incorrect information written on the back of a print.

The picture in question records ‘O2’ No 63934 and appears at the top of page 61, and what caught the eye (once we had gone to press) was that this and the previous view had very different concrete coaling facilities, so one of then couldn’t be Frodingham. Some investigation by author John Hooper has revealed that No 63934 is in fact at Mexborough shed. Sincere apologies for the error. The editor

Frodingham and Scunthorpe

Sir: I would like to send my thanks to your magazine and to Roger Griffiths and John Hooper for their excellent coverage of Frodingham and Scunthorpe, June and July 2023. I was a footplateman from 1956 to 2011. My steam days were at Millhouses depot (19B & 41C). From 1964 to 1975 I was a driver at Rotherwood electric depot (MSW) at Orgreave. From 1965 our depot was allocated the Orgreaves-Brookhouse coke trains to Scunthorpe Entrance C and Normanby Park. The traction was classes ‘31’ or ‘37’ in multiple working. We could take up to 1,700 tons loose coupled. Usually we were routed via Mexboro’, Doncaster over the ‘South Yorkshire’. These trains were regular through the day, five or six as required. The first about 03.00 hours.

Also bank holidays there would be up to seven or eight, and that included Boxing Day, our first crews signing on duty just after midnight. Starting point was either Orgreaves or Brookhouse collieries, returning with empties from Scunthorpe or Normanby Park.

Thank you to Roger and John for their excellent articles, it brought back many memories, and thank you for your excellent magazine.
