Almost four in 10 of us lie to our partners about our online purchases, a recent survey has found.

The survey of 2000 adults in relationships, commissioned by equity release specialists Sovereign Boss, paints a clear picture of the nation’s secret online spending habits.

For gamers, the temptation to invest in the latest tech or games is strong.

From newly released games to upgrades and accessories, gamers are secretly splashing the cash. The survey found that almost three in 10 of those who are hiding their online purchases from their partners are spending on gaming.

But the survey also revealed that three in 10 of the secret spenders are funnelling their funds into hair and beauty products.

This spending might be driven by the desire to maintain appearances, but it’s clear that, for many, these purchases are deemed too extravagant to share with their partners.

One survey respondent said: ‘My husband thinks my hair costs £25 — it’s £125.’

But clothing stands out as the biggest area of secret spending — with 35 per cent of those surveyed admitting to hiding these purchases by lying about the cost and quantity, or hiding that they’ve been shopping at all, by having parcels delivered to their work address.

Psychologist Michael Bernard says: ‘The survey suggests that fear of judgement, a desire for personal freedom or the thrill of keeping a secret, might be motivating these discreet shoppers.
