PATTERN NOTES

The hat brim is knitted in rows, then joined to work in the round. The pattern is worked using the stranded colour work technique, weaving the colour not in use loosely across the back of the work. Carry the colours not in use up the rounds, catching in the floats. For the crown, change over to double-pointed needles if necessary to work the smaller circumference.

HAT

Using 2.75mm circular needles, yarn A and the long-tail method, cast on 144 sts. Do not join.

Work rows 1-13 of Chart in rows, reading chart from right to left for knit/odd-numbered rows, and from left to right for purl/even-numbered rows. 12-st patt rep is worked 12 times across row.

Change to 3.25mm needles. Pm and join to work in the round, taking care not to twist sts. Work rounds 14-47 of Chart, changing colours as indicated.

Dec round (Chart rnd 48): Keeping patt correct, (K2, K2tog) across round. 108 sts.

Work rnds 49-55 of Chart.

Dec round (Chart rnd 56): (K1, K2tog) to end. 72 sts.

Work rnds 57-60 of Chart.

Rnd 62: Knit. Rnd 63: (s2kpo) to end. 12 sts. Rnd 64: Knit. Rnd 65: (K2tog) to end. 6 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a 15cm tail. Pull tail through rem sts.

MAKING UP
