MAJOR ATTRACTION

Nothing could have been much more different to the Coachman Travel Master Imperial tag-axle A-class that I was testing recently (have a look at next month’s issue to read the review) at the Clumber Park Caravan and Motorhome Club site, but I reckon that this beautiful early 1970s Commer was attracting even more attention than ‘my’ nine-metre leviathan.

Apologies to the owner (I didn’t get your name), but this gorgeous classic – a Torcars Sun-Tor Major campervan – was a recent acquisition, bought as a project in association with his son after the sad loss of his wife. It looked in amazing condition for its 50-plus years, had just sailed through an MoT and even had most of its original interior intact, complete with a rear lounge and hinged side door (both rare on a Commer).

For me it sparked happy memories of the yellow and white 1976 Commer Auto-Sleeper my dad drove to Bulgaria in 1980 – a trip that launched my love of campervans. Others on the site seemed equally enamoured; the owner was constantly chatting to folk with stories of their own Commer experiences – after all, 50 years ago these vans were a common sight on British roads, many of them in red and run by the Post Office.
