How to sell your motorhome for the best price with the least hassle

Nothing lasts forever and no matter how happy you’ve been with your motorhome or campervan, there will come a day when it’s time to sell it.

It could be because your circumstances have changed, you need a lighter model because of driving licence restrictions, or simply that you want a newer version with more modern facilities or a more efficient engine that complies with the growing number of clean air zones across Europe.

Whatever the reason for selling, there are a number of steps to take to try to get the best price.

HOW TO VALUE YOUR MOTORHOME

The problem with used values is that there is no definitive guide. With the huge range of models available – sizes, layouts, base vehicles and types, plus the number of optional extras – most models are only produced in small quantities.

This makes valuation difficult. Even dealers have little information to base their used values on.

Unless you have purchased a rare and highly sought-after campervan or motorhome then it will typically devalue over its life.

However, the current market, which has seen an increase in the popularity of motorhomes since the pandemic, has resulted in a rise in used (and new) values as demand was often outstripping supply. This is a temporary blip and the used market is returning to normality.

It depends on when you bought your current motorhome. If it was pre-pandemic, then you could be pleasantly surprised at the value of your ’van. We have seen reports of 10-year-old desirable motorhomes being traded in for the original purchase price.

To get a starting valuation, call a few dealers and request a valuation. Explain your motorhome’s condition, mileage and age and they will often give you an idea of what it might be worth to them. Note that this may be a lower valuation than if you were selling it privately or through a broker, which can often bring in a higher price. How much higher depends on the demand for that type of model.

You can also get a good idea of the relative value of your motorhome, by checking out adverts in this magazine and in the Motorhomes for Sale section of outandaboutlive.co.uk to see what other people are charging for their motorhomes.

PART-EXCHANGING

The easiest and quickest way to sell is to part-exchange with a dealer or manufacturer when buying a new or newer model. You may not get the same price as selling privately, but you have the security of dealing
