WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE Range Rover flavour: Evoque, Velar, Sport or original? They all have their strengths, but we reckon it’s the Sport that’s the best all-rounder.

Why? Well, for starters, it does everything the full-size Range Rover can, but for around £20k less. And that includes pampering the driver and passengers to such a degree that we named it our 2023 Luxury Car of the Year.

It offers throne-like seats and an elevated view out, plus everything is beautifully constructed and the standard air suspension helps deliver superb ride comfort. The spacious interior is generally hushed at all speeds, too.

Performance ranges from ‘brisk’ (0-62mph in 6.6sec) to ‘breathtaking’ (3.8sec), depending on which engine you pick. Indeed, we think the entry-level D300 diesel is all private buyers need; it has more than enough power without lumbering you with massive fuel bills.

On the other hand, company car drivers should look at the two plug-in hybrid options, which have longer official electric ranges than the equivalent BMW X5 or Lexus RX, so they’ll cost less in benefit-in-kind tax.

Speaking of rivals, the Sport’s handling isn’t – despite the name – as sporty as the X5’s, let alone the Porsche Cayenne’s. However, the Sport is easy and relaxing to drive, plus it’s one of the best luxury SUVs for off-road driving.

Unlike its predecessor, the latest Sport is a strict five-seater, but you and your four passengers can carry plenty with you; the boot took eight carry-on suitcases in our test.

It’s that combination of practicality and luxury that makes the Sport a winning choice.
