As I’m big on dangling carrots, today’s column is about just that. Take those who are training for the TCS London Marathon 2023 later this month. Thousands of pounds of charity funds are at stake. Hell, that’s reason enough to get out there and train, isn’t it?

Sometimes our own routine of going for a swim, cycle or hike to improve ourselves sometimes just doesn’t cut it. It’s not enough. We need a more meaningful reason to do it, to work harder and get better. So, girls, how about some commitment in the form of a challenge to give some gravitas to your training?

If you have a friend who’s also keen, then that adds accountability to the mix, as well as a lovely social side. A Sunday afternoon spent cycling up hills in a bid to squeeze some more juice out of your heart and lungs must be worth at least a teensy G&T together at the end, surely?

Raising funds for deserving causes is also a HUGE motivator. Every year, I run something called Festive Fitness Fortnight, where each person pays £25 to take part in a whole variety of unlimited fitness training sessions over Christmas fortnight. The thing that gets everyone out of bed is very possibly the prospect of making a dent in the calorie overload, but also that 100% of the profits go to a nominated charity. This year, the gorgeous members raised over £2,000 for Ovarian Cancer Action. What woman is going to roll over and go back to sleep knowing that?

That said, it doesn’t have to be charity orientated. Booking an activity holiday is also a huge incentive to keep training. Many companies offer walking trips along national trails and, depending on
