While the latest energy price cap saw energy prices fall by 12.3% (£238 annually) for a typical household from April, we’re all still facing higher bills. Start making smarter choices with your appliances by picking more energy-efficient products – and take them off standby mode, too. You could slash hundreds off your bill over the year.

CHOOSING APPLIANCES

When it comes to replacing old appliances, do your homework online to find the most competitive prices, and research ways to cut your energy consumption.

Check the energy label of washing machines. An A-rated one could save you £111 a year compared to a D-rated one, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Fan-assisted ovens are more energy efficient, while electrical hobs cost less to run than gas rings.

Microwaves are generally cheaper to cook with than a conventional oven because they use less energy. The exception may be if you’re using an oven to cook more than one dish at a time.

According to the Energy Savings Trust, dishwashers account for 8% of household electricity bills and cost between £40 and £85 a year to run. If a slimline one would meet your needs, it will cost less at £30-£65 a year.

Buying an eco kettle can help keep costs down, but the important rule of thumb here is to avoid overfilling it. Only boil what you need and you can save around £10 a year.

ENERGY LABELS

Most modern appliances now use less energy, even in standby mode, so if you’re buying anything new, check the brightly coloured bars on the energy label. These tell you how much energy your product uses compared to other similar products. Appliances have a rating of A to G, where A is the most efficient and will save you more on running costs.
