We all want to do our bit when it comes to recycling and sustainability, but can saving the planet also save you money? Absolutely! These tips can help you do both – and in most cases you don’t have to go further than the high street.

DISCOUNTS FOR PRE-LOVED CLOTHES

Having a clear out? Here’s how to get some money off for recycling old clothes.

£5 VOUCHER

Take old clothes or home textiles (any brand or condition) to H&M and receive a £5 voucher to spend at the store. Simply hand the bag over at the cash desk and get your voucher. H&M will sort out the clothes for recycling, reuse or rewear; hm.com.

15% OFF

Get 15% off New Look when you donate old clothes to Hospice UK. You can do this by scanning a QR code in-store and filling out a form to receive your voucher; newlook.com.

20% OFF

Marks and Spencer’s ‘shwopping’ scheme enables you to donate old M&S school uniforms to Oxfam and receive 20% off kids daywear via its Sparks membership; marksandspencer.com.

MONEY FOR OLD SHOES

£5 VOUCHER

Old shoes don’t have much use, but before you ditch them, you could recycle them for money. Take an old pair (any brand) to a Schuh store and you’ll be given a £5 voucher to spend on a new pair at the store for £25 or more. The voucher can be redeemed either in-store or online. Schuh says that it will recycle your old shoes as part of its Sell Your Soles initiative; schuh.co.uk.

BAG 10p

Using your own carrier bags is good for the planet and your pocket, but did you know you can also use them to get money off? Morrisons will give you 10p off your shopping if you return old Morrisons carrier bags for recycling when shopping online. Ocado gives you 10p a bag for its own bags, but will still recycle bags from any supermarket. Like Morrisons, it deducts the money from your shopping bill.

FOOD FOR LESS

Around four million tonnes of food goes to waste each year, according to food charity FareShare. Apps such as Too Good To Go (free to download) can help you rescue food and stop it from going to waste. The app enables you to buy food for an average of £3 from a local store or supermarket. You don’t know what you get in the bag, but it’s usually a fair amount of short-dated goods worth £10 or more; toogoodtogo.com.
