With January fad diets out the way, now’s the time the real trends start to emerge. This year, holistic living is becoming increasingly relevant – we are treating our minds as well as our bodies and focusing on our wellbeing. Concern for the environment is reflected in our food, and ‘natural’ is the buzzword in beauty. Here’s what to look out for…

Climate-friendly nutrition

Eating won’t just be about our health and weight, but the world around us. Climatarianism is following a diet that reduces our carbon footprint. Deemed ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ important by 70% of Waitrose shoppers, climatarianism is about eating locally, seasonally, sustainably and preferably plant-based. It also promotes reducing food waste, avoiding plastic packaging and using refilling stations – all to support a healthy planet.

Our cookware is also changing, too – Lakeland is selling scratchproof eco Earth Pans made from recycled materials (from £44.99). Plus, try Oddbox, which delivers low-waste, sustainable fresh produce to your door. From £10.99, oddbox.co.uk

Exercise for your mind

In a recent survey of David Lloyd Club members, 70% said their wellbeing was the primary driver for joining, while Instagram’s trends report states that ‘wellness is moving outside of exercise’. So, in 2022, we won’t only be keeping our bodies in good shape, we’ll be working out to boost our mental health.

‘More than ever, people are considering not just a work-life balance, but a workout balance,’ says David Lloyd’s Steph Holland. ‘A workout doesn’t need to be a HIIT class or a 5k run; a mindful session that soothes the mind is equally important.’

Alongside classes and saunas, more gyms and spas will offer the likes of light therapy and salt caves.

Choose chickpeas

As vegan eating continues to rise in popularity, it may not come as a surprise that a well-known veggie food – the humble chickpea – is finally getting its moment in the sun. Tastecard, the UK’s largest dining club, has declared protein-rich chickpeas to be the ‘Taste of the Year 2022’, so expect to see more of them on menus and in recipes.
