Fail-safe tips to shake up your routine – and your look

Instant volume
Hairdresser Sam McKnight’s most famous client was probably Princess Diana. But this tip comes from another icon. ‘Kate Moss has naturally fine, flat hair,’ he reveals. ‘To give her hair some volume, she dries it upside down, then pulls it to the top of her head and twists it into a knot. After a few hours, it has a little bit of natural movement in it, plus volume at the root.’ There’s nothing better than a beauty tip that costs less than our morning coffee.

Get a quick boost
Make-up artist Bobbi Brown has a top trick for when you’re feeling down. ‘Stop looking in the mirror!’ she urges. ‘Move your body and drink more water. And add colour to your face, whether it’s pinching your cheeks, applying lipstick or a blush.’ She champions multitaskers to make your regime easier.

Keep things simple
Don’t overcomplicate your skincare routine. ‘I get excited about new ingredients but sometimes we don’t need to reinvent the wheel,’ says skin expert Abi Cleeve. ‘Focus on your skin barrier and UV protection before adding other elements. If you do nothing else and want an effective, long-term routine, make it retinol by night and SPF by day.’ Ultrasun Face SPF50+, £24, lookfantastic.com, and L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser Retinol & Niacinamide Night Cream, £29.99, Boots.
Happier hair
Your hair looks its best when you give it extra care, says hairdresser Michael Douglas, who styles (as well as dates) Davina McCall. ‘Lack of moisture causes friction to the hair follicle, resulting in dry, brittle hair, frizz and flyaways,’ he warns. ‘Applying a mask once a week will put molecules of moisture back into those strands.’ OGX Argan Oil Hair Mask, £8, Sainsbury’s.
