Stop hay fever ageing you

Get sniffles, itching and sneezing under control before they start adding years

Struggling with seasonal allergies? Unfortunately, symptoms such as sore eyes and a running nose aren’t just annoying – they can cause premature ageing. ‘Although hay fever predominantly affects the respiratory system, skin can become dry and irritated, which can cause it to look aged,’ says pharmacist Abbas Kanani*. ‘Inflammation can also trigger the breakdown of collagen and elastin, important for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.’ Here’s how to ease symptoms – and look fresher, fast.

PREVENT UNWANTED WRINKLES

Halting hay fever as early as possible is essential as itchy, red or watery eyes can also lead to permanent premature lines. ‘Inflammation causes the skin to stretch,’ says Abbas. ‘Over time, the skin can remain stretched even after the inflammation goes down. The loose skin can develop into permanent wrinkles.’ The solution? Over-the-counter medication can be very effective. ‘For most people, an antihistamine will be sufficient,’ says Holly Shaw, nurse advisor at Allergy UK. ‘Medication works by either blocking the allergic response or by reducing inflammation.’

BE AIR AWARE

Don’t want to pop pills? ‘The old adage “prevention is better than cure” certainly stands up,’ says airborne allergens expert Max Wiseber. Monitor pollen counts daily on the Met Office website (metoffice.gov. uk) and stay indoors when it’s high – generally on warmer, dry days. Rain washes pollen from the air, so pollen counts should be lower on cooler, wet days. ‘Wraparound sunglasses help stop pollen getting into your eyes, while a hat helps prevent pollen particles being caught in your hair. And, if you have long hair, tie it up,’ says Max.

PRIORITISE SLEEP

Not only do many of life’s problems seem a whole lot better after a good night’s sleep, it impacts hay fever severity too, so stick to a regular bedtime routine. People who get at least seven hours of sleep each night experience significantly milder symptoms than those who average just five hours**.

KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED

Especially in the early mornings, when pollen is being released, and in the evening, when the air cools and pollen falls to ground level. When windows are open, put your pillow under the bed covers to prevent pollen from settling on it.

IS THE PANDEMIC TO BLAME?

There’s been a suggestion that COVID-19 might have “reset” some people’s immune system to make them more susceptible to hay fever, says Max.
