TOP TIP!

If you’re using a tumble dryer, add dryer balls to your load. These will help to untangle your laundry and maximise warm airflow, making the cycle more efficient, says Hotpoint’s Vivien Fodor.

3 easy ways to...stay safe from nuisance calls

There’s things you can do to put an end to unsolicited marketing calls

1 GET ON THE LIST

First, register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). This enables you to opt out of receiving unsolicited marketing calls to your landline or mobile phone. It’s free to register; you can do it at tpsonline. org.uk or by calling 0345 070 0707. Marketing companies use this register to identify people who have said they don’t want to receive marketing calls. It won’t stop all calls, though – for example, firms may still call you if you’ve previously given them permission to contact you by phone. To stop these calls, contact the firm and ask them not to call you for marketing purposes.

2 REPORT IT

If you still receive unwanted marketing calls after you’ve been registered with the TPS for 28 days or you’ve told an organisation not to call you and they still do, you can report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office by calling 0303 123 1113 or online at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/nuisance-calls-and-messages. You’ll also find information on what to do if you receive scam calls and messages, or silent or abandoned calls.

3 EXTRA STEPS

If you want to take it further, you may wish to speak to your phone provider to ask what services it offers to help block nuisance calls. For example, you may be able to block international calls or withheld numbers. You can also buy a ‘call blocker’ device that you can attach to your phone, or which may already be part of a phone. Find out more about these at which.co.uk.
