GOLF HAS LEFT ME IN PAIN

Q After I retired, I decided to take up golf as a way of keeping active, and creating a new daytime social life. I’m currently playing two or three rounds a week and am loving it. But in the past couple of weeks I have developed a sore elbow. I vaguely remember hearing the term ‘golfer’s elbow’ – does that exist?

AYes. Golfer’s elbow is a form of repetitive strain injury affecting the tendon on the inside of the elbow. It will improve over time without specific treatment if you rest it. When you return to golf, it may be worth booking a session with a professional, as an incorrect grip or swing can aggravate the problem.

I had a breakdown when my kidswere small and took Valium for a while and found it so hard to come off it. Can you recommend something herbal?

A St John’s Wort is a herbal remedy that works well for mild to moderate anxiety and depression, and may be a good option for you. It will take a couple of weeks to start to kick in. If you are still struggling though, I wouldn’t rule out prescription medicines. Valium is addictive but only used short-term these days – and we have other options.

Afraid to ask?WILL STROKE AFFECT MY INSURANCE?

Q While I was staying with my family, I had a mini stroke. I was looked after by my daughter’s GP, and have now made a complete recovery. I’m in the process of booking a cruise – will the stroke be on my record, and should I tell my insurance company?

A You should definitely tell your insurance company. Your daughter’s GP will have informed your GP so it will be on your record. Failure to tell your insurance company of any pre-existing condition could render the policy invalid, meaning you could be exposed to huge bills if anything should happen while you are away.
