A new national park for Scotland, vital toad patrols and a Beatles wedding

Nessie to get a national park?

The Scottish government has committed to creating a new national park by 2026. One of the bids includes Loch Ness – famous for its fabled ‘monster’. It also encompasses Glen Affric and the Trees for Life rewilding centre in Dundreggan. It’s hoped that as well as protecting and preserving biodiversity, the new national park will create jobs and homes for local people, and promote sustainable tourism. newnationalpark.org

A CRACKING SHOW

Gavin and Stacey writer and star Ruth Jones dons a nun’s habit to play Mother Superior in Sister Act, The Musical, alongside Beverley Knight as Deloris. It’s a role that couldn’t be further from her hard-living TV character Nessa Jenkins, but Ruth can’t wait for the challenge, saying, ‘Who knew wearing a habit could feel so fabulous!’ From 15 March to 30 August, Dominion Theatre, London.

Did you know?

A metal trading token from the mid-1600s, uncovered in Great Yarmouth, proves Rebecca Murril, a courageous young widow with two children, was running a successful bakery business in her own right. Her name appears on the token, which was vital for trading.

On this day in history

12 March 1969: Paul McCartney, the last of The Beatles to remain single, married American photographer Linda Eastman in a civil ceremony at London’s Marylebone Register Office. Linda had a six-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, and the couple went on to have three children of their own. Their love lasted 29 years, until Linda’s death from cancer in 1998.
