Layering: in fashion, it’s a handy way to keep you trendy and toasty; in beauty, it’s a way to ensure your skincare is working as hard as you are. Layer your products in the right order and they’ll penetrate your skin effectively, improve its texture and fortify its barrier. Fail to do so and, at best, you’ll render your products redundant; at worst, you’ll disrupt your barrier, leaving you with dryness, irritation, acne – or all three. But skincare layering is easy once you understand it. The golden rule? Apply according to molecular weight, starting light and finishing heavy. Consider this your layering cheat sheet.

MORNING

Step 1 Cleanser: Removing any remnants of last night’s skincare and sweat, this is the foundation of any skincare regime. Using a cloth helps to create a clean canvas for the rest of your products and means they’ll be able to work more effectively. Aim for a milk, balm or gel.

Step 2 Toner: While an optional step, toners can balance your skin’s pH, hydrate and even out porosity – allowing serums and moisturisers to work more efficiently. AHAs (lactic or glycolic acid) help to brighten and BHA (salicylic acid) treats spots.

Step 3 Hydration mist: It’s an easy way to keep skin hydrated and a step you can employ on the move, revisiting throughout the day.

Step 4 Eye cream: First, pick one to suit your needs. Want to tackle fine lines? Look for retinol or bakuchiol. Dark circles? Look to caffeine. But never apply eye cream last. The actives won’t be able to penetrate the skin because your moisturiser will act as a barrier. It’s like putting your pants on over your trousers. Try Ren Brightening Dark Circle Eye Cream, £44.

Step 5 Serum: The workhorses of your skincare regime, serums are worth the investment. They target specific concerns and are made up of smaller molecules that can go deeper into the skin. For dehydrated skin, serums containing hyaluronic acid boost moisture, while serums with vitamin C prevent free radical damage (think: pollutants and UV rays) and promote skin health.

Step 6 Moisturiser: This is a must for smoothing the surface of your skin, preventing water loss and boosting barrier function. Products with ceramides help to keep skin plump and dewy. Take this stage as a chance to massage your face, too.

Step 7 SPF: No matter your skin tone, you need SPF. Mi
