REDUCING HEART DISEASE IN MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Research from the RUHX Charity, the official charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath, has shown that pre-, peri- and menopausal women can reduce the risk of heart disease through their Super Rehab programme. Through a tailored diet and exercise programme personalised for each of their patients, support is provided to make sure lifestyle changes are practical and can become part of a daily routine. All without the need for ongoing drugs or surgery.

Heart and circulatory disease cause a quarter of all deaths in the UK. One of the leading signs of cardiovascular disease is exertional chest pain commonly known as angina. This type of chest pain is often caused by disease in the large arteries which supply the heart. However, many patients who present with this type of chest pain may not have blockages in their large arteries.

Super Rehab focuses on patients’ smaller arteries, as patients with angina may have no blockages in their large arteries which can lead to misdiagnosis. This new research project will help to recognise that smaller arteries play a big part in overall heart health and can often be the cause of angina. This is called ‘micro-vascular’ disease, and can affect pre-, peri- and menopausal women. The RUH offers state-of-the-art diagnostics to assess these small blood vessels and are working with their cardiology research team to raise £226,831 to enable them to turn their attention to the treatment of this disease.
