THE BIG QUESTIONS

The running topics we’ve been talking about this month

What do you eat to fuel long runs?

@Laura Hoogendonk

I find that pancakes and peanut butter sandwiches are great food for a marathon.

@heidilammertyn

It’s spaghetti for me!

@Maria Case I like oatmeal and scrambled eggs. I find that gels upset my stomach, so I prefer real food like bananas and peanut butter sandwich bites or low-sugar bars.

Do you do strides to complement your training?

@Gayle Minard Strides are not for me. I absolutely hate them and I won’t do them because I always pull my hamstring when I try them.

@Caroline Jones

Me too. I hate them.

@Karla Barlow I think they work, but I’m a big believer that the strides, or pick-ups as they are sometimes called, should be moved into slowly and held for a longer period of time.

Julia Griggs, running coach and founder of Foxy Ladies Running Club, explains why the club is raising money for cancer charities

“We are raising money for Cancer United and Macmillan Cancer Support by selling a calendar we have put together,” says Julia.

“We are the largest all-female running club in Sussex with 215 female members and have, unfortunately, witnessed how cancer has affected so many of our runners and their families.

“Many of our members have been through cancer themselves – most commonly breast cancer – and returned to running after recovering. These women continue to be an inspiration to the rest of us. Many of us have also had family members affected or sadly lost to cancer.

“The committee organising the calendar is made up of members who have cancer or have recovered from it.” You can buy the Foxy Ladies calendar for £12 from cancerunited. org.uk/shop

Why do you run?

I started running to try and lose weight. That wasn’t successful but I discovered I love running anyway and now I run for mental and physical wellbeing. I’
