Improve your sleep, energy levels, even your mood and posture, with the best personal bed set-up
Feature Anna-Lisa De’Ath
On average we spend about a third of our lives asleep in bed, so it’s essential to have a good mattress to give you the most comfortable sleep possible. Choosing the highest-quality mattress you can afford is one of the best investments you can make towards your overall health and wellbeing. To make your mattress last longer, clean it every six months and cover it with a mattress protector. Rotating (instead of flipping) your mattress occasionally will also help to distribute your weight evenly across the surface and prolong its life.
MEMORY FOAM
A memory foam mattress is perfect if you love a ‘sink in’ feeling when you get into bed, as it moulds to your body’s shape, offering excellent support and pressure relief. Back sleepers need a medium-firm mattress to support the spine and relieve pressure points; front sleepers should opt for a firmer mattress that prevents the back from arching; while side sleepers need a medium firmness that moulds to the shape of the body and protects your neck, shoulders, lower back and hips. Memory foam absorbs and retains heat, so look for clever cooling technology if you tend to get hot in the night. Budget doubles are available for as little as £150, but you can expect to pay up to £2,500 for deeper mattresses or those with more complex layers and materials.
