AW Magazine
13 October 2022

The October issue of AW is a marathon special featuring an exclusive interview with the man of the moment – world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge. We look at how the Kenyan lowered his mark in Berlin once again, how he is having an impact on the sport which few other can currently match and why he can run even faster over 26.2 miles in future. There is also a 10-page special looking back on an eventful staging of the London Marathon, which still produced a string of fascinating stories in spite of a number of athlete call-offs, while our exclusive extract from the new book by international athlete Roger Robinson tells the tale of the 1908 Olympic race which turned the marathon into a global phenomenon. Away from the roads, it has been an eventful year on the track for Ciara Mageaan and the European and Commonwealth 1500m silver medallist explains how finding success has challenged her like never before. There will, literally, be a mountain to climb for competitors at the inaugural World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, which take place in Thailand in November, and Adrian Stott previews an event which has been long in the planning. British international Kate Avery also explains why she left the track behind and headed for the hills. Regular AW contributor John Shepherd provides a searingly honest and thought-provoking account of what it’s like to be a coach in the current climate, outlining the issues which face many of those who are dedicated to helping athletes reach their potential. It’s time, meanwhile, for many athletes to start their winter training. Strength and conditioning coach Andy Kay, who helped Jake Wightman race to world 1500m gold, explains why this is just the right moment to address your weaknesses and tailor your training around them. Running shoe guru Paul Freary also tests out the latest footwear options on the market. With Olympic 400m silver medallist Roger Black the focus of this month’s Ask The Athlete, Eamonn Martin talking us through the greatest race of his career, Katharine Merry delving into the difficult subject of retirement and Verity Ockenden explaining why competing in the Great North Run was a fitting tribute to The Queen, there are lots of reasons to pick up your copy of AW this month!
