The new issue of AW looks back at 2025 through the eyes of the athletes. The winners of this year’s AW Readers’ Awards are unveiled and, right across each category, through exclusive interviews and in-depth reporting, the AW team delves into the stories that made the past 12 months so memorable. Among the interviewees are Faith Kipyegon, who discusses everything from her fourth 1500m world title to her attempt at breaking the four-minute mile, while we also go behind the scenes of the silver medal-winning performances achieved by Britain’s Amy Hunt and Jake Wightman in Tokyo. Though we’ve been celebrating all year, December officially signals AW’s 80th birthday. There have been big changes in the sport since the magazine was first published back in 1945 and Jason Henderson considers what things might look like eight decades from now, in 2105. Columnist Katharine Merry looks at what this year has meant for the sport, while Verity Ockenden celebrates a full circle moment after a return to cross country in Liverpool. The rich history of cross country is also the subject of David Holmes’ latest Athletics Through Time feature. The performance section features training insight from British distance runner Patrick Dever and coaching Swedish coach Yannick Tregaro, while running shoe guru Paul Freary selects the best footwear of the year.
