Take these steps to cut the risk of being broken into when you’re on holiday.

Try to make your house look like it’s occupied while you’re away. Could a trusted neighbour collect your post? If you’re taking your car, you could ask them to park on your drive, too. If you don’t have someone who can take in your post, consider using the Royal Mail Keepsafe service that will hold your mail while you’re away and deliver once you’re back (royalmail.com). Consider using timer sockets that can schedule lights to come on in the evening. And remember to cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries before you go and don’t order anything online that may arrive when you’re away.

When you finally arrive on holiday it can be tempting to post a photo of the view from your hotel room window or tag your location on social media. But depending on who ends up seeing your posts, you might unwittingly be telling a potential burglar that your house is empty. Wait until you’re back home to post your photos and videos.

Double check that you’ve locked all windows and doors before you leave and secure any garages, sheds and outbuildings, too.
