What’s new, what’s great, what we rate – including bargain buys and an eco pick – all chosen by editor Karen Barnes

1. THE SMART TABLE

I first came across Braided Rug Company place mats in a little shop in Deal last year and couldn’t resist them. Stored neatly in a matching jute basket, the mats come in umpteen colourways, but I love the green. There are matching coasters and table runners, too. £39 for 6 x 23cm mats; £49 for 6 x 30cm, braided-rug.co.uk

2. BRING ME FLOWERS

A fluted vase in vibrant green: the home-trend colour of the moment. But that doesn’t matter really – what matters is that it’s a gorgeous shade for now or in 10 years’ time. This well priced piece is made from sodalime glass.

Sass & Belle 21cm high vase, £16, ocado.com

3. 1930s LOOK

If you want an impactful cake stand for displaying Polly Coupland’s spiced bakes and desserts on p54, I’d go for this one from Sous Chef (yes, the website sells a whole lot more than ingredients). It’s made from hand-pressed jadeite glass and available in three sizes. 6in, £37.50; 10in, £67.50; 12in, £82.50, souschef.co.uk

4. SPIN DRY

I used to think salad spinners were space-hoggers, but I’ve realised they’re a game-changer when it comes to quick prep. Oxo Good Grips now has a mini version that’s still a reasonable size for leaf-washing – and it doubles as a salad bowl. Little salad and herb spinner, £27.50; larger version, £32.50, johnlewis.com

5. BARGAIN UNDER £5

Spatulas are one of the most-used utensils, but you don’t often find one in green (if you’re going in for kitchen colour-matching). This one looks smart, does the job – and comes in at a bargain price. Silicone wood spatula, £4.95 (or buy three utensils for £9.95), procook.co.uk
