Vikings on film and in history Vikings have never been more popular - not least because of the TV series Vikings and its dramatic portrayal of the life of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. The show blends myths, sagas and facts to create a thrilling story of Norse warriors. However, how true is the series’ depiction of the Viking Age? Much is based on historical events, such as the Vikings’ attack on Lindisfarne in 793, their raids on England and the siege of Paris. However, different Vikings played those parts in reality. Historical events from several centuries are compressed into 50 years for TV. In this issue, we start with the TV series depiction, before revealing the real story of the Viking Age.
