THE LAND WHERE ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL In 1765, Britain ruled over an empire that circled the globe, but war with France had left the Treasury broke. To refill its coffers, parliament decided to tax the colonists in North America. The new taxes on tea, pamphlets and newspapers sparked anger in the 13 colonies. Citizens formed militias and in 1775, the first shots were fired in the American War of Independence.
