Nail changes

Q I’ve noticed that my nails have white patches and dots on them. Is this normal or a sign of something more serious?

A This is medically termed as ‘leukonychia’ which is in most instances harmless.

If your nails are brittle or breaking easily, it’s agood idea to speak to your GP for ablood test.

This condition was linked to low calcium, but that remains amyth.

It’s important to speak to your GP if you notice that your nails have changed in shape or colour.

Sometimes, afungal nail infection can manifest as whitening and thickening of the nails.

If you see any black lines on your nails these may be an ethnic variation, yet can also signify something more sinister –so do speak to your GP.

Debilitating pain

Q I’ve recently been diagnosed with endometriosis and I’m suffering with severe pain. Are there any ways I can manage the pain so I can get on with my life?

A Unfortunately, there is currently no 100% cure for endometriosis. However there are several ways in which the pain can be managed. There are hormonal and non-hormonal options you can try.

For the hormonal options, we have the combined pill –if eligible –the mini pill, the Mirena coil or the Depo-Provera injections.

The non-hormonal options are analgesics –pain relief medications – like non-steroidal antiinflammatories. You can take these if you don’t suffer from kidney disease, asthma or gastritis, or you’re not using any medication that could increase your risk of gastric bleeds.

We also have the options of opiates – however these can cause dependence, drowsiness &constipation.

Discuss the options with your GP.
